Alan Wake 2 Will be “Remedy’s Take on the Survival Horror Genre”

"Gameplay, narrative, atmosphere, music – it’s all singing from the same hymn sheet," says game director Kyle Rowley.

The survival horror genre is in the best shape of its life right now, and it looks like 2023 is going to be it’s strongest year in a long, long time. We’ve already seen the launch of Dead Space, while another behemoth will be releasing soon in Resident Evil 4. Yet another major survival horror game set to release this year – one that, unlike the two aforementioned games, isn’t a remake – is Alan Wake 2.

The fact that Alan Wake 2 is being made in and of itself is hugely significant, given how long Remedy Entertainment has been trying to get the project off the ground, but as the studio’s first crack at a full-fledged survival horror game, it becomes even more significant. But what exactly can we expect from a Remedy game that – unlike the original Alan Wake, which was an action-adventure title with some horror elements – is fully steeped in the genre?

While Remedy isn’t ready to talk about that just yet, game director Kyle Rowley says that, true to its track record, the studio is going to put its own stamp on the genre and make it its own.

Speaking in a recent interview with GamesRadar, Rowley said: “I’d love to get into those kinds of details, but we are not quite ready to reveal too much about our approach to survival horror just yet. What I will say is that we very much want to put a stake in the ground and say we are creating Remedy’s take on the survival horror genre. Gameplay, narrative, atmosphere, music – it’s all singing from the same hymn sheet, and that was very important for us from the outset.”

How long it’ll be before we begin getting concrete details on Alan Wake 2 and how it will approach the survival horror genre remains to be seen, but Remedy Entertainment remains insistent that the game will be out sometime this year, so hopefully we’ll be hearing more about it before too long.

Alan Wake 2 is in development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
